Turkey Now Leads Europe in Solar Panel Manufacturing

Turkey has quietly become Europe's solar manufacturing powerhouse, with enough production capacity to outpace the continent's traditional industrial leaders combined.

The country now operates 13.2 gigawatts of solar panel manufacturing capacity spread across more than 20 facilities. That's more than Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands can produce together, which totals just 9.7 gigawatts.

Leading manufacturers include Kalyon PV partnering with Hanwha Q Cells at 1.9 gigawatts, CW Enerji at 1.8 gigawatts, and several others producing over 1 gigawatt each. These factories represent thousands of skilled jobs in clean energy manufacturing.

Turkey's domestic solar demand sits around 4 gigawatts annually, meaning most of this production helps other countries go green. Manufacturers are exporting panels to the United States and European Union, filling crucial supply gaps as nations race to meet climate goals.

The country has become particularly attractive to US buyers navigating complex trade policies. Turkish panels face no tariffs or special duties that affect Chinese products or those from Southeast Asian nations.

The Ripple Effect

This manufacturing boom shows how one country's investment in clean energy infrastructure can accelerate the global transition to renewable power. Every solar panel Turkey exports helps another home, business, or community switch from fossil fuels to clean electricity.

The industry is still growing too. Turkey currently has 2.5 gigawatts of solar cell production capacity and 1.2 gigawatts of wafer manufacturing, with expansion plans targeting 5 gigawatts by 2030.

Several new facilities are scheduled to come online between 2027 and 2030, which will make Turkey even more self-sufficient in producing every component needed for solar panels from scratch. That means more jobs, more exports, and more countries able to access affordable clean energy.

The success story demonstrates what's possible when a country commits to building clean energy supply chains. While global solar manufacturing faces overcapacity challenges, Turkey positioned itself strategically to serve markets hungry for reliable renewable energy sources.
