Two NJ Schools Join Elite Apple Distinguished Schools

Two Plainfield, New Jersey schools just joined an exclusive club of innovative educators transforming how students learn for the 21st century.

Plainfield High School and Plainfield Academy for the Arts and Advanced Studies officially became Apple Distinguished Schools, placing them among just 1,100 schools across 41 countries to earn this recognition. The district celebrated with a special ceremony on May 28 honoring both schools for reimagining education through creative, student-centered instruction.

"This recognition prepares our students for tomorrow," said Acting Superintendent Elizabeth Filippatos. "It reflects the work happening every day in our classrooms to ensure students are developing the critical thinking, creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing world."

Apple doesn't hand out this designation lightly. Schools must demonstrate strong leadership, innovative classroom practices, and measurable impact on student achievement to qualify.

At Plainfield High School, students are creating green-screen videos, producing original podcasts, and composing music using professional-grade tools. These aren't just tech exercises but authentic projects that let students express ideas and solve problems creatively.

The Academy for the Arts uses similar technology to amplify student voices across its visual and performing arts programs. Digital production tools, multimedia presentations, and creative apps make learning both engaging and accessible for every student.

Board President Hanae M. Wyatt emphasized this honor goes far deeper than having the latest devices. "This distinction recognizes excellence, innovation, leadership, and the meaningful use of technology to transform teaching and learning," she said. "But this recognition is not about devices. It is about what happens when technology is used with purpose."

This achievement didn't happen overnight. It took dedicated teachers, forward-thinking administrators, and students willing to embrace new ways of learning.

The recognition also validates Plainfield's investment in future-ready learning environments. While some districts debate whether technology belongs in classrooms, Plainfield is proving that purposeful tech integration helps students thrive.

Students across both schools now have access to tools that professionals use in creative industries, journalism, music production, and digital media. They're graduating with more than textbook knowledge; they're leaving with real skills and portfolios showcasing their work.
