Two UNC Juniors Win Top National STEM Scholarship

Two University of North Carolina juniors are joining the ranks of America's most promising young scientists after winning one of the nation's most prestigious scholarships.

Anish Aradhey and Paul Hamrick were selected as 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholars, an honor that recognizes the country's top undergraduate researchers in science, math, and engineering. Established by Congress in 1986, the scholarship identifies future research leaders through a rigorous national selection process.

Aradhey, a double major in physics and biology, dreams of unlocking the mysteries of how galaxies form and evolve. The aspiring astrophysicist has already published research in The Astrophysical Journal and conducted observations at the Gemini Observatory in Chile. His work tackles one of astronomy's biggest questions: how did the universe's billions of galaxies come to be?

Hamrick is pursuing pure mathematics with plans to earn a doctorate and become a university professor. His research focuses on partial differential equations, the mathematical tools used to describe everything from heat flow to quantum mechanics. He recently achieved the highest score of any UNC student since at least 2010 in the Putnam Competition, one of mathematics' most challenging contests.

The scholarship provides more than financial support. It connects winners to a global network of research scientists and fellow scholars, opening doors to collaboration and mentorship.

The Ripple Effect

UNC has become a Goldwater powerhouse, with 12 students winning the award since 2020. That success reflects a growing pipeline of young scientists ready to tackle society's biggest challenges, from climate change to medical breakthroughs.

Frank Leibfarth, a chemistry professor who chairs UNC's Goldwater committee, calls it "the highest achievement for undergraduate STEM majors in the United States." The recognition signals that Aradhey and Hamrick have what it takes to make measurable differences through their future research careers.
