Two World Records Fall on Electric Night in Zurich

Thursday night in Zurich delivered the kind of magic that reminds us why we love sports: two world records, perfect conditions, and 25,000 fans losing their minds in the stands.

Brazil's Alison Dos Santos started the party first, blazing through the 400m hurdles in 45.80 seconds. He beat the previous record set by Norway's Karsten Warholm at the Tokyo Olympics, who finished second and called their event a "crazy discipline."

"I have been showing great form throughout the season, that I am fast, I am strong," Dos Santos said. "As soon as I knew I was coming here, I was excited."

Then came American Masai Russell, the Olympic champion, who flew through the 100m hurdles in just 12.09 seconds. She beat Nigeria's Tobi Amusan's 2022 mark by three hundredths of a second, a lifetime in sprinting.

Both record breakers walked away with $80,000 checks for their historic performances.

The records came during a night of jaw-dropping athletics at Letzigrund Stadium. Swedish pole vaulting superstar Mondo Duplantis battled Greece's Emmanouil Karalis in a thriller that had fans on their feet. Both athletes cleared heights above 6.20 meters for the first time in vaulting history.

Switzerland's own Audrey Werro gave the home crowd something to celebrate too. The 22-year-old ran the third fastest women's 800m ever, clocking 1:53.70 and coming within half a second of a world record that's stood since 1983.
