UAE Joins Svalbard Treaty to Advance Arctic Research

A desert nation is heading to the Arctic, and it's bringing serious scientific ambition with it.

The UAE officially joined the Svalbard Treaty in 2026, marking a major step in the country's growing role in polar research. The move gives Emirati scientists access to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, where researchers from more than ten countries study climate, atmosphere, and ecosystems at one of the planet's most sensitive frontiers.

Svalbard is home to Ny-Ålesund, one of the world's northernmost research stations, and the Global Seed Vault, which preserves millions of seeds as backup for global food security. By joining the treaty, the UAE now has the opportunity to contribute to fieldwork in this international hub of Arctic science.

The accession builds on the UAE's existing work in Antarctica through the Emirates Polar Program. Now, the program spans both poles, allowing researchers to study climate patterns and environmental changes across the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Mariam Almheiri, who chairs the Emirates Polar Program, called the milestone an important chapter for the UAE's scientific engagement. She emphasized that joining the treaty strengthens opportunities for joint Arctic expeditions and helps protect some of the world's most fragile ecosystems.

The move also reflects the UAE's growing focus on science diplomacy, using research collaboration as a bridge to build international partnerships. Abdulla Balalaa, Deputy Chair of the program, noted that climate action is a shared opportunity, and the UAE continues to turn ambition into action through knowledge sharing and strategic initiatives.

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, President of the World Meteorological Organization and Director-General of the UAE's National Center of Meteorology, highlighted the practical value of this expanded involvement. UAE scientists can now directly contribute to global research initiatives at polar stations, advancing climate resilience efforts that serve future generations.
