UAE Startup Wins $136K to Green Deserts With AI Biochar
A homegrown UAE company just won Dubai Holding's top sustainability prize for turning desert sand into fertile soil using artificial intelligence. HyveGeo will receive $136,000 and a fully funded pilot to scale their climate solution across Dubai.
Desert greening just became a reality in the UAE, thanks to a local startup that's cracking the code on making barren land productive again.
HyveGeo, founded by Abdulaziz Bin Redha, took home the top prize at Dubai Holding's Innovate For Tomorrow Impact Accelerator 2025. The company creates biochar, a special soil additive that uses climate engineering, biology, and artificial intelligence to boost food production, water retention, and climate resilience in desert environments.
The win means HyveGeo receives 500,000 dirhams (about $136,000) in cash, plus something even more valuable: a fully funded opportunity to test their solution across Dubai Holding's extensive real estate and business ecosystem. They'll also get one year of free access to in5, a premier startup incubator that will help them grow faster.
The competition was fierce. More than 1,400 startups from 93 countries applied for the program, which narrowed down to 15 finalists who completed a rigorous 12-week accelerator from January to April.
Norway's Cycled Technologies came in first runner-up, winning 250,000 dirhams for their smart recycling bins that automatically sort waste at the source. Netherlands-based CO2Wall earned 100,000 dirhams as second runner-up for their AI-powered living green walls that transform urban spaces.

All five finalists pitched their solutions at Dubai's Theatre of Digital Art to a room full of potential investors, partners, and industry leaders. HyveGeo also won the People's Choice award, showing that both judges and audiences believe in their vision.
The Ripple Effect
This program represents more than prize money. Dubai Holding is building long-term partnerships to tackle sustainability challenges through real-world testing and mentorship from corporate leaders.
The accelerator aligns with the UAE's ambitious national goals: achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and creating a full circular economy by 2031. By supporting late-stage innovators who are ready to scale, Dubai Holding is turning environmental commitments into concrete action.
The program evolved significantly from its 2024 debut. This year's edition included 180 hours of dedicated mentorship and over 15 masterclasses covering everything from environmental impact to business scaling.
Other finalists showcased impressive solutions too. Denmark's Rumett produces reusable mineral wall panels for luxury buildings, while UAE's Mruna developed a nature-based wastewater treatment system that recycles water on-site and pays for itself through cost savings.
The future of sustainable innovation in the Middle East just got a whole lot brighter.
