UAE Students Tackle Water Crisis in School Innovation Program

One hundred young innovators will gather in Dubai next week to present their solutions to one of the world's most urgent challenges: water scarcity.

The finalists represent nearly 1,000 students from schools across Dubai and Abu Dhabi who spent the past year working through AtkinsRéalis's School of the Future program. Students from GEMS Education, Aldar Education, Dubai College, and other institutions tackled real engineering and sustainability problems typically reserved for professionals.

Their solutions show remarkable creativity and practicality. Teams designed sensor-enabled trees that prevent over-irrigation, solar-powered desalination systems for remote communities, and educational apps that track water's journey from source to tap. Other projects focus on technology that encourages sustainable water use in homes and schools.

The timing couldn't be more relevant. The UAE will host the 2026 UN Water Conference this December, and some student teams will get the chance to present their ideas on that global stage. Their voices will join international experts shaping solutions to water security challenges affecting millions worldwide.

Students didn't just develop concepts in classrooms. As self-described "Water Warriors," they brought conservation messages into their communities, teaching families and peers about responsible water use. The hands-on approach helped students build problem-solving skills, collaboration experience, and awareness of careers in engineering and sustainability.

The Ripple Effect

The program's impact keeps growing. More than 80 UAE schools will participate in the 2026-27 academic year, including public charter schools for the first time. The program will also launch in Arabic, opening doors for students from all language backgrounds to engage with industry professionals and explore future careers.

Internationally, School of the Future is expanding to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia. In Canada, it will launch with First Nations communities, adapting the curriculum to local contexts while maintaining focus on sustainability and career readiness.

The September 16 finals at the University of Birmingham Dubai will showcase how students can contribute practical solutions to global challenges when given the opportunity, resources, and trust to tackle them.
