Uber Tests Self-Driving Lucid SUVs in San Francisco

The future of ridesharing just rolled onto San Francisco streets, and it doesn't need a human driver.

Uber employees started testing self-driving Lucid Gravity SUVs last week through the regular Uber app. The sleek electric vehicles use autonomous technology from Nuro, a company specializing in driverless systems that can handle any road situation without human help.

The test rides still include a safety driver up front, but passengers can request these special vehicles just like any other Uber. Employees are providing real-world feedback to help refine the experience before everyone else gets access.

This milestone comes less than a year after Uber, Lucid Motors, and Nuro announced their partnership in July 2024. The plan is ambitious: deploy up to 20,000 Lucid Gravity robotaxis exclusively on the Uber platform over the next six years.

The timing makes sense for San Francisco, which has become America's testing ground for autonomous vehicles. The Bay Area's challenging hills, fog, and dense traffic provide the perfect proving ground for self-driving technology.

Nuro's engineering fleet has already grown to nearly 100 vehicles gathering data across multiple U.S. cities. Each mile driven helps the system learn and improve, making the technology safer and more reliable.
