The Grimes Engineering Center, completed in April 2025 just a quarter mile from one of California's most active fault lines, features giant steel tension rods wrapped diagonally around its exterior. What makes them special is a 4-foot section near the top of each rod made from shape-memory alloy, the same flexible material NASA uses in spacecraft.
During an earthquake, this material acts like a rubber band. It stretches and bends as the ground shakes, absorbing the stress that would normally damage the building. Then it snaps right back to its original straight position, pulling the structure back to perfect alignment.
David Shook, a senior associate principal at architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, explains it simply: "The building's going to come back to plumb."

The architects worked alongside UC Berkeley's engineering school to develop this system. They deliberately left the tension rods exposed instead of hiding them inside walls. The choice serves two purposes: it looks striking, and it teaches students who walk past it every day.
"This is a place where they test, understand, and deploy new technologies in seismic zones year after year," says Mark Sarkisian, a structural engineer and partner at the firm. The visible system turns the entire building into a living classroom.
