Uganda Builds First Bone Marrow Transplant Center

✨ Faith Restored

Uganda is raising $4 million to complete East Africa's second bone marrow transplant facility, bringing life-saving treatment home for thousands of patients who previously had to travel abroad. Pearl Bank, Rotary Uganda, and the Joint Clinical Research Centre are leading the campaign to finish the groundbreaking medical center in Lubowa.

Thousands of Ugandans battling sickle cell disease and blood cancers will soon get life-saving treatment without leaving their country.

A nationwide campaign is underway to raise $4 million to complete Uganda's first bone marrow transplant facility in Lubowa. The Joint Clinical Research Centre, Pearl Bank, and Rotary Uganda are spearheading the effort, with backing from Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga, the traditional leader of Buganda.

The facility will treat patients with sickle cell disease, leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood disorders that currently require expensive treatment abroad. Once complete, it will become only the second bone marrow transplant center in East Africa, joining one in Kenya.

"In many parts of Buganda, before awareness campaigns on sickle cell disease, there was a belief that those suffering from it came from cursed families," Mayiga said at the campaign launch in Mengo. "Now that advancements in science offer a cure, we must rely on science to promote health."

Pearl Bank committed 200 million Ugandan shillings as the financial partner for the project. The bank also set up multiple donation channels on JCRC's website, including mobile money, credit cards, QR codes, and direct bank deposits to make giving easy for everyone.

Dr. Cissy Kityo, JCRC's Executive Director, explained that the state-of-the-art facility will position Uganda as a hub for specialized care across East Africa. She noted that significant groundwork has already been completed, but the remaining $4 million is critical to start treating patients.

Pearl Bank's Managing Director Julius Kakeeto emphasized that this project goes beyond charity. It directly supports Uganda's national development strategy focused on science, technology, and innovation as drivers of economic growth.

The Ripple Effect

Bringing bone marrow transplants to Uganda means families won't face the crushing financial burden of seeking treatment overseas. The facility will train local medical professionals in highly specialized procedures, building capacity that benefits the entire healthcare system.

The project also reduces strain on national healthcare resources by keeping treatment dollars in the country. Those saved funds can support other critical health interventions for vulnerable populations.

For communities across central Uganda where sickle cell disease is common, the facility represents more than medical progress. It replaces old stigmas with scientific hope and proves that world-class healthcare can happen at home.

Uganda is building the future of East African healthcare, one donation at a time.
