Uganda Puts Innovation at Heart of Vision 2040 Plan

Uganda is betting big on homegrown innovation to transform its economy over the next two decades.

Minister Jonard Asiimwe, who leads the country's Science, Technology and Innovation office, announced this week that Uganda is placing innovation at the center of its Vision 2040 development goals. The plan aims to grow the economy tenfold by supporting local inventors and manufacturers.

"Innovators whom you know by name, or sat with in the same class, or went to the same schools are creating Uganda-made products, patented technology, and patented industrial and commercial research and development," Asiimwe told officials during his first meeting with the Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat on Tuesday.

The shift represents a major investment in Uganda's creative workforce. Instead of waiting for outside solutions, the government is backing Ugandans who are developing their own technologies and products.

The minister emphasized that science and innovation will touch nearly every government ministry. The focus will especially benefit sectors tied to wealth creation and economic transformation, turning research labs into engines of national growth.

Uganda's approach comes as the country responds to rapid technological changes happening globally. Rather than falling behind, Ugandan leaders see an opportunity to leap forward by nurturing local talent and protecting their innovations through patents.
