Uganda University Adds Biology, Nursing & Physics Degrees

Ibanda University is launching full science degree programs in 2025, bringing biology, chemistry, physics, and nursing education to western Uganda for the first time. The expansion will help fill critical healthcare and science skills gaps in a region that's long relied on distant universities for these programs.

A small private university in western Uganda is about to make science education far more accessible for thousands of students who previously had to travel hours to study biology, nursing, or chemistry.

Ibanda University announced this week it will launch full science degree programs, a major shift for the 11-year-old institution that has focused mainly on arts and humanities. The new offerings will include biology, chemistry, physics, and nursing with midwifery.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Kanyandago told stakeholders that construction of a science laboratory block is already underway. The university is simultaneously developing curricula to submit to Uganda's National Council for Higher Education for accreditation.

"Once accredited, we shall begin offering science courses at degree level, and in the future, after acquiring a charter, we plan to introduce PhD programmes," Prof. Kanyandago said during Monday's announcement.

The expansion directly responds to Uganda's growing demand for healthcare workers and science professionals. Students from Ibanda and surrounding districts currently face limited local options for science education, often requiring expensive relocations to distant universities.

Dr. Deus Karuhanga, the university's Director of Quality Assurance, emphasized that all programs will meet national standards. The institution operates under regulatory oversight to ensure courses are properly certified before students enroll.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends beyond individual student opportunities. Western Uganda faces persistent shortages of nurses, laboratory technicians, and science teachers. By training these professionals locally, Ibanda University could help staff rural health centers and schools that struggle to attract qualified workers from urban areas.

The university's Board Chairperson Dr. John Busingye urged community stakeholders to support the initiative, noting that despite opening only in 2014, the institution has already become an important educational anchor for the region.

President Yoweri Museveni officiated at Ibanda University's 2014 inauguration, and the institution has steadily grown its enrollment and academic offerings since receiving its provisional license. This science expansion represents its most ambitious development milestone yet.

For students in western Uganda, the message is clear: you won't need to choose between staying close to home and pursuing your passion for science anymore.
