Ugandan Entrepreneur Wins Award for Gold Refining Innovation

When Benard Feni started Euro Gold Refinery, he didn't just want to process gold. He wanted to prove that Ugandans could master world-class mineral refining and keep more wealth at home.

Now his vision is earning national recognition. Feni recently received the Best Innovative and Extraordinary Entrepreneur 2026 award from the Uganda National Innovative Graduates Wealth Creation Association for his work transforming Uganda's mining industry.

The award celebrates more than just business success. Feni's company has become a model for how local value addition can replace raw mineral exports, refining gold to international purity standards of 99.9%.

More than 70% of his employees are Ugandans trained to meet global benchmarks. That workforce development is helping build skills that didn't exist in the country before.

In Abim, his company supports artisanal miners in obtaining proper licenses and formalizing their operations. The company has similar partnerships in Mubende and recently secured a mining license in Yumbe focused on responsible practices and integrating local miners into the formal economy.

"This is a message to all Ugandans, especially the youth, that it is possible to achieve extraordinary things," Feni said after receiving the award. He called the recognition unexpected but deeply motivating.

Beyond the refinery, Feni runs the Mungu Feni Foundation, which supports education, youth empowerment, and humanitarian programs in vulnerable communities. The foundation recently won Best Community Transformation Organisation in East Africa and multiple honors at Uganda's West Nile Quality Brand Awards.

The Ripple Effect

Feni's dual approach shows how private enterprise can drive both economic growth and community development. As Uganda pushes to industrialize and add value to its natural resources, entrepreneurs like him are proving the model works.

His story resonates beyond mining. By training Ugandans for high-skilled work and supporting grassroots miners, he's creating pathways out of poverty while keeping more of the country's mineral wealth within its borders.

The recognition from his peers signals a shift in how Uganda views entrepreneurship, not just as profit-making but as nation-building.

One young entrepreneur is showing his country that local talent can compete globally and lift communities along the way.
