Starting next month, the Department of Work and Pensions will use real benefit payment data instead of survey responses alone. This change means poverty figures dating back to 2018 will likely be revised downward, potentially by as many as 500,000 children.

The Resolution Foundation think tank estimates that child poverty rates in recent years were overstated. Their research suggests the problem, while still serious, wasn't quite as severe as the headlines indicated.

This isn't about denying hardship or cutting support. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made reducing child poverty a top priority, with policies aimed at lifting 500,000 children out of poverty by 2030. Those commitments remain unchanged.

The revision actually tells an encouraging story about the 2000s. During Tony Blair's government, child poverty may have fallen more dramatically than anyone realized at the time. The government might have even hit poverty reduction targets they thought they'd missed.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies praised the move, calling it a "big improvement" that's especially important now that both UK and Scottish governments are targeting specific child poverty measures. Benefits form a crucial income source for struggling families, so getting those numbers right matters enormously.

The adjustment doesn't change what families receive or how many people claim benefits. It simply provides a clearer picture of what's really happening in homes across Britain. Some children previously counted as living in poverty were actually just above that threshold all along.
