UK Couple Travels 30 Countries for Less Than Their Old Rent

Karen and Myles Davies were working themselves to exhaustion, juggling multiple businesses seven days a week, when they realized something had to change. In 2016, the British couple walked away from their corporate careers for what they thought would be a one-year break.

That was nearly ten years ago, and they haven't looked back.

Now 58 and 59, the Davies spend their days traveling across Europe in their motorhome, affectionately named "Scoobie." The biggest surprise? It's actually cheaper than their old life. Their monthly expenses run between $2,000 and $2,700, compared to the $1,800 they used to pay in rent alone.

"We had to make tough choices, and leaving wasn't easy, but it was necessary," Karen said. The couple had reached a breaking point, feeling unfulfilled despite years of nonstop work.

Since hitting the road, they've logged over 110,000 miles across 30 countries. Their travels have taken them from the fjords of Norway to the beaches of Portugal, and even into North Africa, including Morocco.

The couple funds their nomadic lifestyle through a mix of income streams. Myles manages their investments and rental property back home, while Karen works as a writer and yoga teacher on the road.

"We live a simple life in a very small space, and simplicity has given us more meaningful moments, people and experiences," Karen said. Living in close quarters has taught them what truly matters.

The journey hasn't been without obstacles. Brexit restrictions now limit how long they can stay in certain European countries. Popular destinations have grown more crowded, pushing them to discover hidden gems off the beaten path.

Why This Inspires

The Davies story shows that sometimes the financially responsible choice is also the adventurous one. Their decision to prioritize well-being over status challenged conventional wisdom about what security looks like.

Their approach to travel has evolved too. "In our early years of traveling together, we drove like maniacs," Karen admitted. Now they take their time, focusing on deeper experiences rather than rushing to check destinations off a list.

After nearly a decade on the road, they have zero plans to return to traditional life. "Life is too short to regret," Karen said. "You have to make choices that bring you happiness."
