UK Gets Best Solar Eclipse in 26 Years This August

Mark your calendars for August 12, because the UK is about to witness its most spectacular solar eclipse in over a quarter century.

The moon will pass between Earth and the sun that evening, blocking up to 95% of sunlight in parts of southwestern England. Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will get the best views in the entire country, while Bristol, Somerset, Devon, and Wales will see around 90% coverage.

The show begins at 6:17 PM and reaches its peak at 7:12 PM before ending at 8:06 PM. Because it happens during the evening, finding a spot with a clear western horizon will be essential for catching the full spectacle.

Local astronomy clubs across the region are already planning viewing parties. Bristol Astronomical Society will gather at the Downs in Clifton, while Bath Astronomers head to Beckford Tower and Wells & Mendip Astronomers meet at Wells Cathedral Green. Simon Holbeche from Bath Astronomers shared a simple trick for scouting locations. Stretch out your hand toward the western horizon with thumb and pinkie spread wide, thumb touching the horizon. Your pinkie shows where the sun will start its eclipse journey, giving you a preview of whether trees or buildings might block your view.

Safety comes first when watching any solar event. Regular sunglasses won't cut it for this. Viewers need special eclipse glasses certified with ISO 12312-2 standards, or they can watch through solar telescopes at astronomy club events. Some creative stargazers will build pinhole projectors to view the eclipse indirectly.
