UK Heat Pumps Now 5X More Efficient Than Old Boilers

Heating buildings just got a whole lot greener. UK heating specialist Dimplex unveiled new air-to-water heat pumps that can efficiently warm apartment blocks and commercial buildings while slashing energy waste.

The game-changer? These systems achieve a seasonal performance rating of up to 5.20, meaning they produce over five units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. Traditional gas boilers barely manage one-to-one efficiency.

Dimplex designed two models for buildings with heating needs between 30 kW and 60 kW. That covers everything from small apartment complexes to schools and office buildings. The units use propane as a natural refrigerant instead of synthetic chemicals that harm the atmosphere.

What makes this launch particularly exciting is how practical it is. The systems plug right into existing heating infrastructure, whether that's old boilers, solar thermal panels, or other renewable setups. No need to rip out and replace entire heating systems.

Installation got simpler too. The company built these units with a plug-and-play design that reduces engineering headaches and speeds up setup time. For larger buildings, up to 14 units can work together to provide heating capacity up to 500 kW.

The larger model operates at just 54 decibels, quieter than a normal conversation. That matters for hospitals, schools, and residential buildings where noise complaints can derail green energy projects.

The Ripple Effect

This technology arrives as Europe races to decarbonize building heating, which accounts for roughly 40% of energy consumption across the continent. Commercial and residential buildings represent one of the toughest nuts to crack in the climate puzzle.

The flexibility here opens doors that were previously closed. Building managers can start their transition to clean heating without massive upfront costs or construction disruptions. They can keep their current systems running while adding efficient heat pumps alongside them.

The units work in temperatures from negative 22°C to 45°C, making them suitable for most European climates. Building operators can monitor and control everything through a free smartphone app, with premium features available for facilities managers who need deeper control.
