Here's why this matters. When solar panels and wind turbines generate more power than the grid can handle, the system faces a "bottleneck" problem. Think of it like water rushing through pipes that are too small.

If Scottish wind farms pump out maximum power while southern households need electricity, the infrastructure connecting them can overload. Without intervention, this causes unplanned blackouts.

Right now, the National Grid sometimes pays renewable generators to shut down because it's cheaper than letting the system crash. Britain can generate impressive amounts of green power, but the country hasn't finished building enough infrastructure or batteries to store and move it all efficiently.

The incentive program also helps stabilize the entire grid. By spreading electricity demand throughout the day instead of concentrating it during peak hours (weekdays between 4pm and 8pm), households reduce dangerous price spikes and system strain.

Meanwhile, engineers are racing to build the "bigger pipes" Britain needs. New transmission infrastructure and battery storage facilities are under construction to match the country's renewable generation capacity.

For now, charging your electric car at midnight or setting your washing machine on a timer could mean free power and a more stable energy future for everyone.
