UK Homes Install Solar Panels Every 2 Minutes in 2026

Something remarkable is happening on British rooftops: every two minutes, another home or business is taking control of its energy future with solar panels.

Nearly 172,000 solar installations have gone up across the UK since the start of 2026, according to new government data. July alone saw almost 28,000 new systems installed, making it the third-highest month on record.

Rooftop solar is leading the charge, accounting for more than 19,800 installations in July. That's seven out of every ten new solar systems going on homes and businesses rather than large solar farms.

The Southeast is blazing the trail with 22,628 installations over the past year, bringing the region's total to more than 305,000 systems. But the solar boom isn't limited to sunny southern England.

Every corner of Britain is joining in. Wales saw an 18% increase in installations over the past year, while Scotland's grew 14%. Even traditionally cloudier regions are embracing solar power.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks celebrated the milestone, noting that families from the Southeast to Scotland are cutting their energy bills while generating clean, homegrown power. The government's Warm Homes Plan aims to make rooftop solar even more affordable for British families.

The timing couldn't be better for household budgets. Research from April 2026 found that domestic solar and wind generation was saving Britain around £7 million daily in energy costs during higher gas prices linked to Middle East tensions.

The Ripple Effect

Britain's solar surge is transforming how the nation powers itself. In July, solar supplied 14.4% of UK electricity generation, smashing the previous monthly record of 12.4% set just two months earlier.

Major retailers are making it easier than ever to join the solar revolution. Following new regulations that legalized plug-in solar panels on August 27, stores including Amazon, B&Q, Currys, and Lidl are now offering systems up to 800W that households can simply plug in themselves.

The momentum builds on years of steady growth. Britain crossed two million total solar installations in March 2026, representing 22.1GW of clean energy capacity spread across homes, businesses, and solar farms throughout the country.

For families watching their energy bills, the math is simple: solar panels mean less money sent to utility companies and more control over household expenses.
