UK Installs Solar Panel Every 2 Minutes in Record Year

Britain is installing a solar panel every two minutes, and families are reaping the rewards with energy bills dropping by hundreds of pounds each month.

New government data reveals 2025 was the strongest year ever for solar power in the UK, with 269,000 installations completed nationwide. An impressive 95% of these were rooftop systems on homes, businesses, and other buildings rather than sprawling solar farms.

The solar surge continued into 2026, with nine of the ten best-performing months on record happening in just the past year. April 2026 alone saw nearly 23,000 new installations, with more than half being residential rooftop systems.

The milestone follows another historic achievement in March 2026 when Britain surpassed 2 million total solar installations for the first time. Meanwhile, the cost of buying and installing solar panels has dropped by up to 9%, making clean energy more accessible than ever.

Households are leading the charge, with rooftop solar saving families up to £480 monthly on energy bills. The government is accelerating adoption by requiring solar panels on new homes in England and rolling out affordable plug-in panels that families can place on balconies or outdoor spaces.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the security benefits. "As we face a second fossil fuel crisis in 5 years, Britain is taking back control of their energy by generating more clean power than ever before," he said.

The Ripple Effect

The solar revolution extends far beyond residential rooftops. Numatic International, maker of the beloved Henry the Hoover, launched a new solar park that will supply 20% of its Somerset factory's electricity needs.

Healthcare is joining the movement too. Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust installed rooftop solar expected to cut bills by £9,500 annually, freeing up funds for patient care. Wren Kitchens is building what will become the UK's largest factory rooftop solar array.

The government's Great British Energy solar scheme is installing panels on 100 schools and colleges this year, teaching the next generation about clean energy while reducing operational costs. The government also recently approved Springwell Solar Farm, which will become the largest power-producing solar facility in UK history.

Britain is proving that clean energy isn't just good for the planet—it's smart economics that puts power back in people's hands.
