UK Launches £30M Fund for Community Clean Energy Projects

Imagine your local library powered by solar panels your community owns, with the savings going straight back into neighborhood services instead of energy company profits.

That's exactly what's happening across the UK as state-owned Great British Energy opens applications for £30 million in community-led clean energy funding. Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the program will support over 1,000 local projects, from rooftop solar installations to community-owned wind farms.

Here's what makes this different: local authorities and community groups will actually own these projects. That means reduced energy bills for local services and profits flowing directly to the towns and villages where the power is generated, not distant corporations.

The funding package includes £20 million for community groups across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to test, develop and build their own clean energy assets. Another £5 million helps local authorities partner with community groups on joint projects that deliver lasting local benefits.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh emphasized the timing: "Everyone deserves a stake in our energy future. Through these local power projects, communities can reap the full benefits of clean energy—reducing emissions, cutting bills and reinvesting profits to benefit local areas, instead of big energy companies."

The program builds on early successes already showing real results. Over 150 renewable projects are now powering public buildings across England, with total savings expected to reach £50 million that can be reinvested in local services.

The first 11 schools to receive GB Energy rooftop solar funding are saving £175,000 annually combined. An £80 million commitment will help around 200 schools install solar, plus £100 million for hospitals to do the same.

The Ripple Effect

This initiative represents the first wave of up to £1 billion in community energy investment announced earlier this year. GB Energy's five-year plan aims to establish at least 15GW of clean energy generation and storage capacity while mobilizing £15 billion in private finance.

The government plans to announce this autumn how community groups can claim ownership stakes in larger renewable projects, creating partnerships where local areas share in the proceeds of clean power generation.
