UK Locks In 14.7GW of Clean Power at Record Low Prices

Britain just made its biggest bet on clean energy ever, and the numbers tell a story of genuine progress that's hard to ignore.

The UK government announced results from a record-breaking renewables auction that secured 201 projects generating 14.7GW of clean power. That's enough electricity to supply 16 million homes with energy that won't spike in price when global markets shake.

The real headline isn't just the size. It's the price. New onshore wind locked in at £72.24 per megawatt hour, and solar at £65.23. Both sit at less than half the £147 cost of building and running new gas plants.

Combined with an offshore wind auction from January, Britain is now racing toward its 2030 clean power target with projects that will cut household bills instead of raising them. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called clean British power "the right choice for our country" after seeing prices come in over 50% cheaper than gas alternatives.

The auction unlocked £5 billion in private investment and will support up to 10,000 jobs across the country. Real infrastructure is going up in communities that need the work.

Cornwall is getting its largest onshore wind project in a decade through the Imerys Wind Farm. Scotland's Sanquhar II Wind Farm in Dumfries and Galloway will become the fourth largest onshore wind farm in the entire UK. And West Burton is transforming the site of Britain's last coal power station into the country's largest solar farm ever to win a government contract.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about cleaner air or hitting climate targets. It's about protection from the kind of fossil fuel price shocks that have triggered half of all recessions since the 1970s.

The government is also putting £1 billion into a Local Power Plan that lets communities own and control their own clean energy projects. That means local wealth stays local, and neighborhoods get a real stake in the energy transition happening around them.

The move follows action to cut £150 off energy bills starting in April and deliver the biggest public investment in home energy upgrades the country has ever seen. Chris Stark, Head of Mission Control, called the results "another boost for Britain's 2030 clean power mission" that delivers more homegrown power and greater energy security at prices consumers can actually afford.

Britain is proving that betting on renewables isn't just good for the planet. It's the smartest economic move on the table.
