UK Pensioners Missing £1,300 in Benefits They Can Claim

Thousands of British pensioners are leaving money on the table, and most don't even know it exists.

A new report from retirement specialists Just Group reveals that 74% of eligible pensioner homeowners fail to claim government benefits they're entitled to receive. The average unclaimed amount? A substantial £1,339 per year.

The findings show that 42% of pensioner homeowners qualify for at least one government payout. Yet the vast majority never apply, despite many living in low-income households hit hard by rising costs.

"Our survey once again reveals what appears to be an epidemic of pensioner homeowners missing out on income they are entitled to claim," said David Cooper, director at Just Group. These are households likely struggling with the cost of living crisis, he explained.

The problem appears to stem from simple lack of awareness. Many pensioners don't realize programs like guaranteed pension credit, savings pension credit, council tax reductions, and universal credit even exist for them.

The council tax reduction numbers are particularly striking. Fewer than one in four eligible people claim it, despite the average benefit exceeding £1,000 annually.

Nearly a million pensioners miss out on pension credit specifically, which serves as the main means-tested benefit for older Britons. It also acts as a gateway to other benefits like winter fuel payments.

The Ripple Effect

The impact goes beyond individual households. When struggling pensioners receive the support they're entitled to, they can afford heating, food, and medicine without choosing between necessities.

The report found that some pensioners miss out on multiple benefits simultaneously. Six in ten eligible people miss one key benefit, 12% miss two, and 5% miss three different programs.

Even more concerning: 14% of those already claiming benefits receive too little, missing out on an average additional £1,162 yearly. One customer was found to be short £113 per week, totaling nearly £6,000 annually.

The solution is surprisingly simple. These benefits aren't paid automatically but checking eligibility takes just five minutes online through government websites.

Cooper emphasizes the urgency: "It's important cash-strapped pensioner households do not simply assume there is no state help available." A quick check could transform a tight budget into manageable finances.
