Offshore wind turbines generating renewable electricity against blue sky and ocean

UK Renewables Hit 52.5% of Electricity in 2024

Britain just reached a major clean energy milestone: more than half of its electricity now comes from renewable sources. Wind and solar generation have grown tenfold since 2015, reshaping the nation's power grid.

For the first time ever, renewable energy powered more than half of Britain's electricity grid in 2024, marking a turning point in the country's clean energy journey.

New government statistics show renewables generated 52.5% of UK electricity last year, a record-breaking share that climbed 6% from the previous year. Total renewable output reached 152.5 terawatt hours, enough to power tens of millions of homes.

Wind energy led the charge, contributing 30% of all electricity generated. That's 87.1 terawatt hours from wind turbines spinning across the country, up 4% from 2023. Solar panels also had a banner year, jumping 37% to produce 20 terawatt hours and claiming nearly 7% of the energy mix.

The progress becomes even more impressive when looking back a decade. Both wind and solar now generate ten times what they produced in 2015, transforming from minor players to the backbone of Britain's power system.

The shift happened during a year when Britain burned zero coal for electricity and nuclear power hit record lows. While fossil fuel use ticked up slightly to 32% (mostly natural gas), it remains near historic lows as the country steadily moves away from carbon-heavy energy.

The Ripple Effect

This renewable energy boom affects more than just environmental statistics. It's changing household budgets too.

"Low cost renewables reduce our reliance on gas, which still sets electricity prices most of the time and is vulnerable to spikes," said Tara Singh, CEO of RenewableUK. When wind and solar generate power, they shield consumers from the price swings that plague imported fossil fuels.

The momentum shows no signs of slowing. The government's next renewable energy auction opens in July with more than double the offshore wind capacity eligible compared to last year's round. If ambitious targets are met, even more affordable clean power could lock in lower prices for years to come.

Britain's grid is proving that renewable energy isn't just good for the planet—it's becoming the most reliable, affordable way to keep the lights on.
