UK Retailers Pledge 100,000 Jobs for Young People

✨ Faith Restored

Over 40 major UK retailers are joining forces to create 100,000 work placements for young people not in work, education, or training over the next three years. The program guarantees each participant an interview and aims to break the "no experience, no job" cycle keeping a million young people out of work.

Big name retailers across the UK just made a promise that could change the lives of 100,000 young people stuck on the sidelines of the job market.

Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Tesco, Asda, and more than 40 other major retailers have teamed up with the government to offer work placements to young people aged 18 to 24 who aren't currently working, studying, or training. Each placement lasts two to four weeks and comes with guaranteed job interview at the end.

The program, called Opening Shift, already has 11,305 placements lined up and ready to go. Participants will work 16 to 35 hours per week, keep their welfare benefits throughout, and get paired with a workplace buddy to help them learn the ropes.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Right now, about 1 million young people in the UK fall into the "Neet" category (not in employment, education, or training). Without action, that number could jump to 1.25 million within five years.

The statistics reveal a heartbreaking catch-22. Six out of 10 young people who are Neet have never held a job, which means they can't get hired because they lack experience, but they can't gain experience without getting hired first.

That's exactly what Opening Shift aims to break. Marc Bolland, the former M&S chief executive leading the initiative, already helped 200,000 unemployed young people find work through his charity Movement to Work.

The Ripple Effect

Retail touches every corner of the country, making it the perfect industry to tackle youth unemployment at scale. When a young person lands their first job, they don't just earn a paycheck. They build confidence, learn workplace skills, make professional connections, and open doors to future opportunities.

The program shows what's possible when business and government work together. Retailers get access to motivated workers, young people get their crucial first break, and communities benefit from having more young people engaged and employed.

Other companies joining the effort include Pets at Home, New Look, Wickes, Currys, and Greggs. Each has committed to not just offering placements, but creating real pathways into permanent positions when available.

Young people can access the program through their local jobcentres, removing another barrier to entry. They won't have to navigate the complicated process of leaving and rejoining welfare programs for short term work.

The goal isn't just temporary placements. It's launching careers, building futures, and making sure a generation of young people don't get left behind.
