UK Sets Aside Millions to Help Families Heat Their Homes

About 1.5 million British families, mostly in rural areas, depend on heating oil instead of regular gas and electricity. One family saw their quote jump from £315 to £653 for the same amount of oil in just three days.

Unlike gas and electricity bills, heating oil isn't protected by the energy price cap that shields other households until June. That left these families particularly exposed when oil prices surged more than 20 percent following tensions in the Middle East.

The Prime Minister made his position clear. "Whatever challenges lie ahead, this government will always support working people," Starmer said at Monday's press conference. He added that moments like these reveal what a government truly stands for.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce the full details of the support package next week. The direct payments will target the most vulnerable households, though the exact number of families receiving help hasn't been confirmed yet.

The government isn't just offering help. It's also warning energy companies against exploitation. Starmer took a firm stance against firms suspected of canceling orders and raising prices to profit from the crisis. "If the companies have broken the law, there will be legal action," he promised.

Reeves already wrote to the Competition and Markets Authority asking them to stay on high alert for unjustifiable price hikes. Over the weekend, she and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband met with fuel providers to put them on notice.

The Ripple Effect

This support package represents a shift toward more targeted help rather than blanket bailouts. The government is planning ahead for other households too, developing different support options in case gas and electricity prices remain high when the price cap lifts in June.

Analysts predict household energy bills could rise 10 percent in July, adding £160 annually for typical dual-fuel homes. The Treasury is working through various scenarios to protect families without repeating the £35 billion six-month bailout from 2022.
