UK Solar Hits 22 GW After Decade of Rapid Growth

After years in the shadows, Britain's solar industry is lighting up again with growth not seen in a decade.

The United Kingdom now has 22 gigawatts of solar power installed, according to government data from February 2026. That's enough clean energy to power millions of homes, and it grew by 12.6% in just one year.

The biggest story is happening in farm fields and open land across the country. Large solar plants bigger than 25 megawatts are popping up at record speed, reversing years of stagnation after government subsidies disappeared in 2015.

Back then, the solar industry hit the brakes hard. The government withdrew support for big projects and slashed incentives for home installations, causing deployment to plummet from a record 4.3 gigawatts in 2015 to a near standstill.

What changed? The government brought back long-term contracts that guarantee stable income for solar farms. In December 2024, only 22 megawatts of solar had these contracts, but by February 2026, that number jumped to 626 megawatts.

The pipeline looks even brighter. The government's seventh contract round approved a record amount of solar capacity, promising more large projects will break ground in coming years.

But it's not just utility companies getting in on the action. British homeowners are going solar in record numbers too, with small rooftop systems growing from 5.4 gigawatts to 6.3 gigawatts in the past year.

In fact, 2025 became the biggest year ever for residential solar installations. More than 203,000 systems were certified, beating a record that stood since 2011.

The Ripple Effect

This solar surge means cleaner air for British communities and lower electricity bills for thousands of families. Every new installation chips away at the country's dependence on fossil fuels while creating local jobs in installation and maintenance.

The momentum should accelerate further when promised government grants and loans for home upgrades roll out. England and Wales are also preparing mandates requiring rooftop solar on new buildings, which could add thousands more systems annually.
