UK Solar Hits Record 14.4% of Electricity in July

Solar panels across Great Britain just delivered their strongest month ever, powering 14.4% of the country's electricity in July and proving renewable energy has moved from experiment to everyday reality.

The record broke the previous high of 12.4% set just two months earlier in May. Solar generated 3.2 terawatt-hours of electricity during July, a massive jump from the 9.6% it supplied during the same month last year.

The growth isn't coming from massive solar farms alone. More than 142,000 solar installations went up across the UK during the first half of 2026, making it the strongest start to any year since government subsidies ended. Most of those panels are appearing on residential rooftops as families discover solar power can dramatically cut their monthly energy bills.

On July 12, during sunny weather following a heatwave, solar briefly supplied nearly one-fifth of Britain's electricity. Between 10:30 a.m. and midday that day, solar accounted for 44% of all electricity generation, a stunning snapshot of how powerful this technology has become.

Chris Hewett, head of Solar Energy UK, said solar has evolved from "a niche technology into a mainstream player" that delivers affordable, reliable electricity produced right at home. Julian Leslie from the National Energy System Operator pointed out that renewables now generate about 60% of Great Britain's electricity, compared to just 3% in 2000.

The solar boom is creating real economic opportunity beyond just cheaper electricity. The combined solar and battery storage sectors contributed nearly £1.9 billion to the UK economy in 2024 and supported around 20,000 jobs. By 2035, industry experts expect those numbers to nearly double, with 43,000 jobs and £3.5 billion in annual economic value.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

The solar surge is transforming Britain's entire energy landscape. Renewable sources generated more than half of the country's electricity in 2025, only the second year on record to hit that milestone. Battery storage systems, which store excess solar power for cloudy days and nighttime use, generated more electricity than traditional pumped-storage hydropower for the first time last year.

The cost of battery systems has plummeted by 40% since 2017, making it increasingly practical for households and businesses to store their own solar power. Meanwhile, the price of lithium-ion batteries dropped 90% between 2010 and 2024 while improving in quality and lifespan.

UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the record demonstrates that growing domestic electricity generation improves energy security, reduces long-term costs, and creates skilled jobs across the country.
