UK Startup Brings Safer Battery Tech to Homes

Home solar panels just got a greener, safer partner that works even when it's freezing outside.

Cambridge startup Eleven Energy launched a new home battery system this week that replaces lithium with sodium, a common element that's safer to handle and doesn't require rare earth mining. The company has already installed the systems in several hundred UK homes through a network of over 100 certified partners, marking one of Europe's first large-scale residential uses of sodium battery technology.

The breakthrough matters because traditional lithium batteries can be expensive, require careful temperature control, and rely on materials mined under questionable conditions. Sodium batteries sidestep these problems while storing solar energy just as effectively for everyday home use.

The system centers on stackable battery modules that each store 4.5 kilowatt hours of power. Multiple modules connect to specially designed inverters and AI software that decides when to store solar energy, when to use it, and when to pull cheaper electricity from the grid during off-peak hours.

One standout feature is cold weather performance. The batteries charge in temperatures as low as negative 20 degrees Celsius and discharge down to negative 30, eliminating the need for energy-hungry heating systems that lithium batteries require in colder climates. They also use 92% of their total capacity in normal operation and up to 95% during power outages, beating many lithium alternatives.

The Ripple Effect

This technology shift reaches far beyond individual rooftops. By proving sodium batteries work reliably at scale, Eleven Energy is opening the door for countries to store renewable energy without depending on lithium supply chains often concentrated in just a few nations.

The environmental wins multiply quickly. Sodium is extracted from seawater and mineral deposits found almost everywhere, reducing mining impacts. The batteries last for 8,000 charge cycles or 10 years under warranty, meaning less electronic waste over time.

Homeowners benefit from simpler installation (setup takes under five minutes via a phone app) and compatibility with existing solar panels through AC retrofit options. The system automatically optimizes energy use based on weather forecasts, electricity prices, and household patterns, requiring virtually no daily input.

Eleven Energy plans to scale up next, developing a 100 kilowatt-hour commercial system with a 50 kilowatt inverter by 2026. They're also refining the AI software to get even smarter about predicting energy needs and battery health.

What started as a chemistry swap is becoming a practical path toward cleaner, more accessible home energy storage that doesn't compromise on performance or safety.
