Ukrainian Athlete Gets $200K After Olympic DQ

When Vladyslav Heraskevych was barred from competing at the Milan Cortina Olympics, he thought his message about Ukraine's fallen athletes had cost him everything. Instead, it earned him something far more valuable: recognition as a hero at home.

The 27-year-old skeleton racer was disqualified last week for refusing to remove his "helmet of memory." He had decorated it with images of more than 20 Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed during the war with Russia.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov gave Heraskevych over $200,000 through his charity foundation. The amount equals exactly what Ukraine awards its Olympic gold medalists.

"Vlad Heraskevych was denied the opportunity to compete for victory at the Olympic Games, yet he returns to Ukraine a true winner," Akhmetov said. The businessman owns Shakhtar Donetsk soccer club and previously owned the Azovstal steel works in Mariupol, a city devastated by the war.

The money will go to Heraskevych's charity foundation to support both his athletic career and his continued advocacy work. His coaching staff will also receive support to help him train for future competitions.

Heraskevych's disqualification could have ended his career before it truly began. Elite winter sports like skeleton require expensive equipment, travel, and coaching that most athletes can't afford without major sponsorships or national support.
