Ukrainian Paralympian Credits ChatGPT for Silver Medal
A Ukrainian Paralympic biathlete used AI as his coach, psychologist, and doctor for six months before winning silver. His innovative approach shows how technology can amplify human potential in unexpected ways.
Most Paralympic medalists thank their coaches and families, but Ukraine's Maksym Murashkovskyi had someone else to credit after winning biathlon silver: ChatGPT.
The 25-year-old vision impaired athlete revealed he spent six months using the AI chatbot to design his training plan, boost his motivation, and even help with medical decisions. "It was a huge volume of all of my training," Murashkovskyi said after finishing second at the Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics on Sunday.
Guided by Vitaliy Trush, Murashkovskyi competed in his first Winter Paralympics and immediately made an impact. He placed seventh in Saturday's sprint event and has three more chances to medal this week.
The approach clearly worked. Murashkovskyi already had World Championship bronze and multiple World Cup medals before turning to AI, but he saw room to grow beyond "classical training, as I've always done, with humans."

He used ChatGPT as a multi-tool: sports psychologist, training coach, and medical advisor all rolled into one. The technology helped him refine tactics and maintain mental focus during the grueling preparation for the world's biggest stage.
Why This Inspires
Murashkovskyi's story shows how technology doesn't have to replace human connection. It can enhance what we're already capable of achieving. He didn't abandon traditional training methods but added a new dimension that worked for his unique needs as a vision impaired athlete.
His openness about using AI also breaks down barriers about what's possible in adaptive sports. While he thinks human coaches won't be fully replaced for five to 10 years, he believes parts of their role will evolve with technology's help.
Ukraine currently sits second in the medal table with 10 medals across Para-biathlon events, including three golds. Murashkovskyi's silver adds to that impressive showing while pointing toward a future where athletes and technology work together in revolutionary ways.
"I can give great credit to ChatGPT," he said. "I believe in it, it is a revolutionary technology."
