UK's Largest EV Battery Plant Gets New Ring Road Approval

Britain's biggest bet on electric vehicles just got the green light to move forward with critical infrastructure that will connect communities while building the future of clean transport.

Somerset Council approved plans for a new ring road surrounding the massive Agratas gigafactory currently under construction between the villages of Puriton and Woolavington. The £4 billion factory, backed by an additional £380 million in recent government funding, will become one of Europe's largest battery plants when it opens in late 2027.

About 600 workers are already on site building the facility. That number will jump to around 2,900 construction workers during the next 14-month phase, bringing a major economic boost to Somerset.

The new road isn't just about moving cars. Wide pedestrian and cycling paths will run the entire length of the route, creating safe connections between Puriton and Woolavington that didn't exist before. Residents will get easier access to local services like Woolavington Surgery without needing to drive.

Bus stops are planned for the northbound lane, ensuring workers can reach the factory via public transport. Council officials are also working with National Highways to improve connections from the M5 motorway, making the site accessible from across the region.
