UN Drive Reaches 12M Unvaccinated Kids in Africa and Asia

Millions of children who missed vaccines during the pandemic chaos are finally getting the protection they need, and the results are remarkable.

The Big Catch-Up, launched in 2023 by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, set out to find and immunize kids left vulnerable when COVID-19 shut down health systems worldwide. The initiative just wrapped up in March after three years of work across 36 countries in Africa and Asia.

The numbers tell an inspiring story. About 12.3 million children who had never received a single vaccine are now protected against diphtheria, polio, and other preventable diseases. Before the drive began, around 15 million children hadn't gotten their measles shot alone.

The campaign focused on kids aged 1 to 5, the ones most at risk after missing their routine immunizations during the pandemic. Health workers went into communities to track down families whose children had fallen through the cracks of the healthcare system.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond the immediate vaccinations, this effort created lasting change in how countries protect their children. Health systems improved their ability to identify and reach older kids who missed earlier doses, meaning future gaps are less likely to happen.

The timing matters more than ever. Measles outbreaks are rising in every region, with 11 million cases registered in 2024. Each child vaccinated through this drive represents a life protected and a family given peace of mind.

The campaign also showed what's possible when global health organizations coordinate their efforts. By combining resources and expertise, they created a system that didn't just deliver vaccines but strengthened entire immunization programs for the long term.

While funding challenges remain and final data is still being compiled, the initiative proves that catching up is possible when the world works together. These 12.3 million children now have the same fighting chance as kids who never missed a shot.
