UNC Charlotte Athletes Win Conference Titles, NCAA History

The Charlotte 49ers just wrapped their most impressive athletic season yet, with student athletes rewriting record books and bringing home championship hardware across multiple sports.

Men's golf made history by winning back-to-back American Athletic Conference Championships, becoming the first team to repeat since 2018. Coach Ryan Cabbage, named Conference Coach of the Year, led five players to All-Conference honors—the most since 2006.

Women's tennis turned heads with a 16-game winning streak that pushed them to their highest national ranking ever at No. 30. The team narrowly missed their first conference title in a nail-biting 4-3 championship final against Rice, but their stellar season earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Once they got to Athens, Georgia, the team made the most of it. Charlotte swept Elon University 4-0 for the program's first NCAA Tournament win in history before falling to tournament host and top seed Georgia.

These victories represent more than trophies. Track and field's Sarah Pullium broke two school records in two weeks while maintaining the highest GPA among female student-athletes, earning the Bonnie Cone Award. Zak Freeland became the first runner in school history to break the four-minute mile.

Sophomore golfer Pinky Chaisilprungruang won American Conference Women's Golfer of the Year for the second straight season, dominating the conference championship by nine strokes. Her success shows that young athletes can compete at elite levels while building lasting legacies.

The 49ers also celebrated academic excellence at their annual Normies awards ceremony, where Graham Gutknecht received the Provost Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award for exemplifying scholarship alongside athletic performance.

Across tennis, lacrosse, softball, and track and field, Charlotte athletes earned all-conference honors for multiple consecutive years, proving the program's upward trajectory isn't a fluke—it's the new standard.
