University of Arkansas Graduation Rate Soars to Record 73%

More students are crossing the graduation stage at the University of Arkansas thanks to a targeted rescue mission for those who nearly made it. The school's six-year graduation rate jumped to a record 73%, while its four-year rate hit 62%, marking the biggest yearly increase in five years.

The secret? Two programs that hunt down students who got close to finishing but got stuck. The Graduation Pathways Working Group identifies students who stopped attending, struggled academically, or transferred away without their degrees. Then the Mission 6-Year Graduation Project team swoops in with personalized support to help each student overcome their specific roadblocks.

The first group they targeted were students who started as freshmen during the COVID-19 pandemic in fall 2020 and 2021. Many faced financial challenges made worse by the pandemic, so the Financial Aid Office stepped in with targeted assistance based on each student's personal situation.

The payoff is huge. Every single percentage point increase means about 70 more students graduate each year from an incoming class of 7,000. This year's 2.17 point jump in the six-year rate translates to roughly 150 additional graduates entering the workforce with degrees in hand.

"These students worked hard to reach this milestone," said Deborah Korth, senior associate vice provost for student success. The Mission 6 team included advisers, faculty, academic coaches, financial aid staff, and registrar's office employees who collaborated across departments to catch students before they fell through the cracks.

The initiative also looks beyond individual students to fix systemic problems. The working group identifies consistent barriers to graduation and recommends policy changes that will help future students avoid the same obstacles.

The Ripple Effect

The success of these 102 students represents more than personal victories. It took the University of Arkansas 25 years to climb from a 55% graduation rate in 2000 to 71% in 2019, but leaders believe they can accelerate that timeline significantly now that they understand what works.

The school aims to reach an 80% graduation rate as part of its 150 Forward Reaching Higher Strategic Plan. At that level, an additional 700 students per year would graduate compared to the old 70% benchmark, multiplying the economic and social impact across Arkansas communities.

With record incoming GPAs, record scholarship funding, and these proven intervention strategies, the 80% goal looks reachable.

Jen Caba, who led the Mission 6 project team, says pinpointing each student's exact challenges made all the difference. "We've been able to tailor our support to meet their specific needs," she explained. The team continues working with more at-risk students this fall and spring.

Sometimes the difference between dropping out and graduating isn't talent or effort, just the right support at the right moment.
