US Clean Energy Hits Record High Despite Federal Delays

America just crushed its own clean energy record, lighting a path toward a brighter, cleaner future for millions of families.

The country switched on 164 new renewable energy projects between April and June 2026, adding enough clean power to supply electricity to 83 million households. That's the strongest second quarter and first half of any year on record, according to the American Clean Power Association.

Solar panels led the charge with 7.4 gigawatts of new capacity, followed closely by land-based wind farms at nearly 5 gigawatts and battery storage at 4.7 gigawatts. Together, these projects are pushing America's total clean power capacity close to 388 gigawatts.

The real showstopper was New Mexico's SunZia Wind project, which became the largest land-based wind farm ever built in the United States. At 3.65 gigawatts, it generates more electricity than the Hoover Dam and will power up to 1 million homes across the Western states.

Companies and utilities keep choosing renewable energy because it's fast to build and affordable to run. Clean power projects are racing ahead to meet surging electricity demand across the country, proving that green energy isn't just good for the planet but good for business too.

The Bright Side

These impressive numbers could have been even stronger. Federal permitting delays and policy barriers slowed or stalled numerous projects that were ready to break ground.

The land-based wind project pipeline actually dropped 4% during the quarter due to regulatory roadblocks. Despite these headwinds, the clean energy sector continues proving it can deliver reliable, affordable power when given a fair shot.

"Clean energy continues to prove itself in the marketplace. It's the fastest to build, the fastest to scale, and is delivering the energy our country needs," said JC Sandberg, ACP's Chief Policy Officer.

The message is clear: when clean energy competes on level ground, it wins, and American families benefit from cheaper, cleaner power.
