US Jobless Claims Hit Near 57-Year Low in September

The American job market is thriving in ways we haven't seen since the late 1960s. New unemployment claims dropped to just 196,000 for the week ending September 12, marking only the eighth time since 1969 that initial claims have fallen below 200,000.

The numbers tell a story of remarkable stability. These claims came in well below the expected 207,000, showing employers are holding onto their workers even as economic uncertainty swirls.

Even more encouraging, continuing unemployment claims (people still receiving benefits) dropped to 1.73 million in early September. That's the second-lowest reading since May 2023 and sits at the very bottom of the range we've seen for the past year.

To put this in perspective, the average week before the pandemic saw about 345,000 initial unemployment claims. We're running at nearly half that rate right now.

The four-week average, which smooths out weekly ups and downs, has dropped to 203,250. That's roughly 36,000 lower than the same time last year, showing consistent improvement rather than a one-week fluke.

The Ripple Effect

This labor market strength touches millions of American families directly. When layoffs stay low, workers feel more secure about making big purchases, planning vacations, and investing in their futures. That confidence ripples through entire communities as people spend at local businesses and save for their children's education.

The sustained low unemployment also means companies are finding ways to retain talent rather than cut staff during challenging times. Workers who might have struggled to find new positions in previous economic cycles are instead staying employed, building their skills, and advancing their careers.

Continuing claims have now stayed lower year-over-year for 32 straight weeks, the longest such streak since December 2022. While finding a new job might take slightly longer than it did at the peak of the hiring boom, far fewer people need to search in the first place.

Americans are working, and they're staying employed at rates that seemed impossible just a few years ago.
