US Marine Robert Gilman Freed from Russian Prison

A former US Marine who spent nearly four years in a Russian prison is finally on his way home, and his mother is right there beside him on the plane.

Robert Gilman, 32, was released by Russia on Tuesday after President Vladimir Putin approved his pardon on humanitarian grounds. President Trump announced the news, emphasizing that no exchange took place and no Americans were traded for Gilman's freedom.

"Russia asked for no one in return," Trump shared on Truth Social. The release came after intense weekend negotiations between US and Russian officials.

Gilman was arrested in January 2022 while traveling by train in Voronezh, about 340 miles south of Moscow. Russian authorities accused him of kicking a police officer while drunk, but his father insists the charges were false, saying his son had fallen ill and accidentally made contact with the officer.

The officer was uninjured, dropped the charges, and never presented evidence at trial. Despite this, Gilman received a four and a half year sentence.

Recent weeks brought serious health concerns. Gilman had been moved to a civilian hospital's psychiatric ward in late June in what doctors assessed as a "dissociative stupor," a catatonic-like state.

But US officials who spoke with Gilman on his flight home Tuesday shared encouraging news. "All things considered he seems to be in good shape," one official reported. The former Marine is walking and talking, with four doctors monitoring him during the journey.

His mother Nina is traveling with him to Washington Dulles Airport, where senior US officials will greet them. From there, Gilman will likely head to a rehabilitation center in San Antonio, Texas.
