US Pressure Helps Congo Reclaim City from Rebel Forces

Residents of Uvira, the second largest city in South Kivu, are celebrating as rebel forces withdraw following successful international pressure and support for Congolese troops.

The M23 rebel group, which had contested control of the city in recent weeks, is now pulling back from its positions. Fighters are expected to leave Sange, the last village under their control in the area, and move toward Kamanyola in the coming days.

The breakthrough came through a combination of diplomatic efforts and practical military assistance. Around twenty US officers joined Congolese forces on the ground, with some helping plan operations and providing strategic support. The message was clear: the international community wanted peace restored to Uvira.

A US private military company, Vectus Global, reached an agreement with the Congolese government in January to support the effort. Members of the company worked alongside Congolese soldiers, offering intelligence and artillery expertise that helped tip the balance.

Now that M23 forces are withdrawing, the focus shifts to keeping residents safe. UN peacekeepers from MONUSCO (the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo) are deploying to Uvira. Hundreds of additional government troops continue arriving to reinforce security in the city.

The M23 did respond with a drone attack on Bangoka Airport near Kisangani, about 700 kilometers from the main conflict zone. Authorities reported that all eight explosive-laden drones were shot down before reaching their targets, and no one was injured.
