US Renewable Energy and Natural Gas Hit Records in 2024

The United States reached a major environmental milestone in 2024 as renewable energy consumption jumped to an all-time high, according to new data from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Americans consumed 8.7 quadrillion British thermal units of renewable energy last year, marking a 5% increase from 2023. Solar power led the charge as one of the fastest-growing energy sources, alongside wind and biofuels.

Meanwhile, coal consumption fell 3.7% to its lowest point in 75 years of federal record-keeping. The shift shows America's energy system is evolving toward cleaner sources, even as overall energy use increased just 1%.

California experienced the largest shift toward renewables, despite a drop in natural gas use. Georgia's nuclear energy consumption grew after Plant Vogtle expanded with two new units entering service.
