U.S. Solar Power Hits Record 9% of Electricity in 2025

America's solar revolution just hit a milestone that seemed impossible a decade ago.

Solar power generated nearly 9% of all U.S. electricity during the first eleven months of 2025, up from just over 7% the year before. The numbers from the U.S. Energy Information Administration show solar growing faster than any other electricity source in the country, with utility-scale solar projects jumping 34.5% and rooftop installations rising 11% compared to 2024.

November alone brought eye-popping growth. Solar accounted for 7.2% of total electricity that month, leaping from 5.9% the previous November. That's more than a 27% increase in just one year.

Wind and solar together now provide nearly one-fifth of all American electricity. That's more than either coal or nuclear power can claim individually. Wind continues leading renewable sources with over 10% of total generation, but solar is closing the gap fast.

The shift becomes even clearer when you zoom out to all renewable energy. Wind, solar, hydropower, biomass, and geothermal combined generated nearly 26% of U.S. electricity through November 2025, up from 24% the year before. Only natural gas produces more power, and even that declined almost 4% year over year.

The real story lives in what's being built right now. Between January and November, America added over 22 gigawatts of utility-scale solar and 5.5 gigawatts of rooftop solar. Battery storage exploded by almost 50%, adding over 13 gigawatts of new capacity to store all that sunshine for cloudy days and dark nights.

Coal capacity? Still shrinking. Natural gas and nuclear? Barely growing.

The Ripple Effect

Looking ahead to 2026, the momentum only builds. The EIA expects renewables to account for more than 99% of all new electricity capacity added next year. Solar alone will soon overtake wind, coal, and nuclear in total installed capacity.

Ken Bossong, Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign, points out that despite political headwinds, renewable energy has become unstoppable. What started as an alternative is now becoming the mainstream, reshaping how America powers homes, businesses, and communities.

Every percentage point of growth means less pollution, more energy independence, and proof that massive change is possible when technology and determination align.
