USD Basketball Team Helps 1,900 Shelter Pets Find Homes

When the University of San Diego men's basketball team showed up at their local animal shelter on Saturday morning, they came ready to work.

All 21 players and staff spent two hours at the San Diego Humane Society's Morena Boulevard location, rolling up their sleeves for animals in desperate need of help. The shelter is currently caring for nearly 2,000 animals, with 840 pets immediately available for adoption.

The team made more than 300 meatballs for shelter dogs, prepared 160 welcome packets for families adopting new pets, and tackled mountains of laundry. But perhaps their most important contribution was taking photos with adoptable dogs to help them find forever homes.

"With nearly 2,000 animals currently in care, the partnership couldn't have come at a better time," said Jordan Frey, spokesman for the San Diego Humane Society. The shelter has been facing an ongoing crisis as animal intakes continue to outpace adoptions.

The student athletes didn't just complete tasks behind the scenes. They met with adoptable dogs, spending time with animals who have been waiting for families, and used their platform to bring attention to the shelter's needs.

The Ripple Effect

This visit represents more than just two hours of volunteer work. When college athletes use their visibility to highlight community needs, they inspire fans and fellow students to take action too.

The women's basketball team has already scheduled their own volunteer day for July 29, doubling the impact. And every photo the players share of adoptable pets reaches thousands of potential adopters who might not otherwise visit the shelter.

For shelters nationwide facing similar overcrowding, these partnerships show a path forward. When local organizations team up with beloved community figures, awareness spreads and adoption rates climb.

The 840 pets currently waiting at the San Diego Humane Society now have a better chance of finding homes, thanks to a team that proved community service matters just as much as what happens on the court.
