Utah Charter School Wins Double Robotics State Championship
A small charter school in southern Utah just beat out much larger programs to take home not one, but two state robotics championships. Three teams from Vista School are now heading to the world competition in Missouri.
Three student robotics teams from a small Utah charter school just proved that big wins don't require big budgets.
Vista School, a tuition-free K-9 public charter in Ivins, swept the Vex Robotics State Championship in March. All three of their teams took first place, earning spots at the world championship in St. Louis this April.
The victory is especially sweet because Vista competed against much larger, established programs. Dr. Justin Blasko, the school's director, called the double win "remarkable" and noted that their opponents included perennial favorites with far more resources.
The three teams have memorable names: Vexalicious, Crash Crew, and the Tyrannical Turtles. The Turtles are actually a high school team made up of Vista alumni who still use the school's robotics lab after hours to practice and program their robots.
This marks the third time Vista has won the state championship at the middle school level. But this year's high school win is a first for the program, making the double victory even more special.

The Vex Robotics competition changes every year, presenting teams with fresh engineering challenges. Students must design, build, and program robots to complete specific tasks in timed matches while judges evaluate their performance, documentation, and interview skills.
Why This Inspires
What makes Vista's success so compelling isn't just the trophies. It's watching students at a small public charter school develop real-world skills that will serve them for life.
The program teaches teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking through hands-on engineering challenges. Students learn to code, troubleshoot, and iterate on their designs when something doesn't work the first time.
They're also building communication skills and resilience as they work through setbacks in a competitive environment. These are the kinds of abilities that translate directly to future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
This is Vista's seventh season competing in Vex Robotics and their sixth year qualifying for worlds. The consistency shows that the school has built something sustainable, not just caught lightning in a bottle.
The program has also created a strong sense of community pride, bringing students together around shared goals and celebrating their achievements as a school family.
When these Utah students head to St. Louis at the end of April, they'll carry with them proof that passion and hard work can level any playing field.
