Utah Police Use Sensory Bag to Calm Autistic Teen in Crisis

When Salt Lake City police responded to a report of an elderly woman being assaulted, they could have made the situation much worse. Instead, their training helped them see what was really happening.

Body camera footage shows officers arriving to find a teenager grabbing at an elderly woman in an SUV. The boy was screaming and resisting, but the woman was begging officers not to separate them.

Something clicked for the responding officers. They recognized the teen was likely autistic and experiencing a crisis, not committing a crime.

The Salt Lake City Police Department trains every year with KultureCity, an all-volunteer nonprofit that teaches first responders how to recognize and respond to people with sensory needs. Officers also carry sensory bags in their patrol cars filled with fidget toys and calming items.

One officer called out for a sensory bag as they gently separated the boy from his caregiver. The woman explained she was trying to calm him enough to drive home but had never seen him this upset.

The teen kept shouting "I don't want to calm down" as officers offered him different sensory items from the bag. They spoke slowly and stayed calm, giving him space to regulate his emotions.

Within minutes, his voice lowered. He started engaging kindly with the officers and even gave one a high five.

"We not tantrum anymore," the boy said. The officer confirmed with a smile: "No tantrum. Smiley face."
