UVA's Kate Douglass Breaks World Record in 50m Freestyle

Olympic champion Kate Douglass just proved she's still got more speed in the tank. The University of Virginia alumna broke the world record in the 50-meter freestyle on Friday, clocking an incredible 23.59 seconds at the Tyr Pro Swim event in Indiana.

Douglass wasn't alone in making swimming history. Fellow UVA star and 2024 Paris Olympian Gretchen Walsh finished second with a 23.78, also beating the previous American record they had shared at 23.91.

Current Virginia swimmer Anna Moesch rounded out the podium in third place, making it a complete sweep for the Cavaliers. It's rare to see one school dominate an elite international event like this.

The world record caps an already impressive weekend for Virginia's 27-person contingent at the competition. The group included current student athletes, alumni, and members of UVA's professional training program.

Douglass's mark was the fifth gold medal claimed by Virginia swimmers in just the first two days of competition. Rising fourth-year Tess Howley earned bronze in the 200-meter butterfly, while rising third-year David King took silver in the 200-meter backstroke.
