The University of Washington men's rowing team just pulled off the closest victory in Windermere Cup history, beating Great Britain's Olympic gold medalists by less than two-tenths of a second. In front of a roaring hometown crowd, the Huskies defended their turf in what coaches are calling the most thrilling race in the event's 40-year history.

On a perfect Seattle morning, the number one ranked Huskies faced off against the British National Team, a crew featuring seven athletes who medaled at last year's World Rowing Championships. The British team took home Olympic gold in 2024 and silver at the World Championships just months ago.

Northeastern University led at the 500-meter mark, but Washington surged ahead in the second quarter of the race. The British crew came roaring back in the final 500 meters, catching up to the Huskies in a sprint that had the packed Montlake Cut crowd on their feet.

The finish was so close that spectators couldn't immediately tell which boat crossed first. Washington clocked 5:29.082, just 0.165 seconds ahead of Great Britain's 5:29.247.

"It was a hell of a win," said head coach Michael Callahan, who has experienced more than half of the 40 Windermere Cups as both rower and coach. "I don't think we've ever raced two crews of this caliber at the same time here in my coaching career."

Three-seat rower Lyle Donovan credited the home crowd for the final push. "In the last 500, we really felt the energy of the crowd, the boat, people on shore above us on the bridge, and that really fueled us to the end," he said.

The Ripple Effect

This victory means more than bragging rights. The same British crew that Washington just edged out will head to Europe for World Cup competitions this summer, culminating in the World Championships in Amsterdam this August.

The Huskies proved they can compete with the absolute best in the world. Washington swept the day's events, also winning the Erickson Cascade Cup and the Third Varsity Eight race against Western Washington.

The win sets up Washington perfectly as they prepare to defend their national title at the IRA Championships later this month. When athletes push each other to be better, everyone wins.
