Ventura Walk Raised $10K for Breast Cancer Patients

When 500 people walked along the Ventura coast last year, they weren't just raising awareness. They were paying their neighbors' bills.

The inaugural Ventura Breast Cancer Walk raised $10,000 in 2024, with every dollar going directly to four Ventura County residents struggling with treatment costs. The money helped pay for transportation to appointments, groceries, utilities, and housing expenses when everyday costs became overwhelming.

Betsy Watson and Charnell Smith created the walk from deeply personal experience. Both are breast cancer survivors who understand the emotional, physical, and financial challenges that come with diagnosis.

Watson was diagnosed in January 2020. A social worker for 30 years and two-time Ironman finisher, she brought the same determination from her athletic achievements to supporting others facing breast cancer.

Smith drew on her community connections and involvement with Aloha Steakhouse to turn their idea into reality. She coordinates logistics and local partnerships while making the walk an uplifting gathering for survivors, patients, caregivers, and families.

The response to their first event exceeded expectations. Hundreds of people participated, and the founders were able to provide immediate, tangible help to four local families at a critical time.

The Ripple Effect

The walk's impact extends beyond the dollars raised. Watson and Smith created a space where survivors feel celebrated, loved ones are remembered, and isolation gives way to community.

By keeping every dollar in Ventura County, the event provides immediate relief to neighbors going through treatment. When medical appointments pile up and work hours decrease, help with utilities or groceries can make the difference between staying afloat and going under.

The walk also reminds patients of something equally important: they are not alone. For Watson, whose career has been devoted to helping others, the event ensures people have support when they need it most.

Smith hopes the gathering will continue to raise awareness while becoming a place where the community comes together around compassion and hope. The founders want the walk to grow into a Ventura County tradition built on neighbors helping neighbors.

The second annual Ventura Breast Cancer Walk returns to the Ventura Promenade on October 18, ready to turn another beautiful coastal day into real help for local families.
