Vermont Tech Students Win $30K in Scholarships

Students at Vermont's Windham Regional Career Center walked away with more than diplomas this spring. They earned over $30,000 in scholarships while proving that technical education can open serious doors.

On May 21, the Brattleboro school held its annual awards ceremony, inducting 21 students into the National Technical Honor Society. This isn't just another honor roll. These students mastered real career skills in fields like automotive technology, healthcare, forestry, and electrical work while still in high school.

Getting into NTHS takes more than good grades. Instructors nominate students based on technical achievement, attendance, and leadership potential. Students then complete resumes and cover letters explaining why they deserve membership, just like applying for a real job.

The ceremony recognized students across 10 different career programs. Some studied early childhood education while others trained in aviation careers or criminal justice. One common thread connected them all: they're graduating with actual workforce skills, not just theory.

The Ripple Effect

These scholarships represent something bigger than individual achievement. Vermont, like much of America, faces skilled labor shortages in trades and technical fields. Programs like this one prepare young people to fill those gaps while earning good livings.

Students like Destiny Thibeault, who received three separate awards, show what happens when schools invest in multiple pathways to success. Not every teenager dreams of a four-year university, and that's perfectly fine when technical programs offer solid alternatives.

The ceremony also awarded graduation cords to all students who completed two-year programs. These cords symbolize industry credentialing and technical skill development that employers actually want. While their peers might graduate with general diplomas, these students leave with specific, marketable abilities.

Community organizations stepped up too. Local businesses, lodges, and foundations funded the scholarships, showing how communities benefit when they invest in hometown talent. The Brattleboro Savings and Loan, Kiwanis Club, and Chamber of Commerce all contributed awards.

Over $30,000 might not sound like massive money compared to some scholarship programs, but it makes a real difference for students entering affordable technical training programs. Many can complete certifications or associate degrees without crushing debt.

These 21 students prove that career and technical education deserves respect. They're not taking an easier path; they're taking a different one that leads straight to employment in fields desperate for qualified workers.
