Victorian MPs Raise $30K With Icy Plunge for MND Research

🦸 Hero Alert

Politicians from both sides of Victorian Parliament dunked themselves in ice baths to raise $30,000 for motor neurone disease research. The event honored AFL legend Neale Daniher and was organized by MP Emma Vulin, who was diagnosed with MND two years ago.

Just days after saying goodbye to AFL legend Neale Daniher at his state funeral, Victorian politicians proved his fighting spirit lives on by raising $30,000 for MND research one ice bath at a time.

The second annual Parliamentary Big Freeze saw government and opposition members put aside political differences to take the plunge at Spring Street. Opposition Leader Jess Wilson dressed as her childhood hero, Constable Maggie Doyle from Blue Heelers, while Sport Minister Steve Dimopoulos celebrated the Socceroos World Cup win in full soccer gear.

Deputy Opposition Leader David Southwick stole the show, arriving with a tape deck blasting the Village People's YMCA before his icy dunking. Liberal MP Nicole Werner came as a character from The Saddle Club, taking the plunge for a family friend who lost their brother to the disease.

The event was organized by Pakenham MP Emma Vulin, who has continued serving her community while fighting MND herself. Participants dressed as what they wanted to be when they grew up, bringing joy and laughter to a cause close to many hearts.

Wilson, who personally raised $10,000, said the event showed how communities unite around important causes. "In a time where I think there's a lot of division in society and in the world, this is one of those causes that people actually come together," she said.

Labor Minister Paul Edbrooke came as Steve Irwin and summed up the experience perfectly: "Crikey, it was cold."

The Ripple Effect

Neale Daniher's widow Jan attended the event, watching politicians honor her husband's legacy of bringing people together to fight what he called "the beast." Premier Jacinta Allan thanked her for joining and praised Daniher for teaching the community about MND through his strength and courage.

The event also highlighted Emma Vulin's lasting impact on Parliament itself. Allan recognized how Vulin changed the institution to ensure people of all abilities can participate equally while serving their communities.

Vulin told the gathering that seeing Parliament come together meant everything to families facing MND. "Sometimes we're fighting in the chambers, we're all coming together for one cause," she said.

Minister Dimopoulos vowed to take the plunge every year Parliament holds the event, calling it one way to hold the hand of someone walking through something as significant as MND.

The Parliamentary Big Freeze proves that even in politics, compassion and community can trump division when it matters most.
