Lead researcher Georg Böhmig believes this could represent a paradigm shift in transplant medicine. The treatment strategy might also work for organ transplants from genetically modified pigs and could extend to heart transplants or post-transplant rejection episodes.
The research team published their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine and is already planning larger clinical trials to systematically study the benefits and risks. If those studies confirm these early results, thousands of patients currently considered untransplantable might finally have hope for a second chance at life without dialysis.
